In Albania, Roma (including many children and young people) are discriminated against on the basis of their origin and largely excluded from society. In the project “Bring about Change”, excluded minorities are to be integrated into society by means of educational opportunities and targeted measures to improve state support.

Challenges

“Persistent discrimination and the resulting inequalities of opportunity lead to the exclusion of children and young people belonging to the Roma minority. Once families find themselves in this spiral of disadvantage, this usually also means that access to education, work, health care and the housing market is denied. The only way to survive is often for underage children and young people to do small jobs or even beg in the streets. Without financial means and social support, these children have neither a carefree childhood nor prospects and chances for a better life.

Approaches for action

The open social center of ARSIS offers an indispensable contact point: In addition to numerous offers such as education about hygiene, pointing out work opportunities, advice on family planning, information about rights and duties towards the state, mediation for kindergarten and school visits, there are also numerous creative leisure activities and homework assistance. Children and young people who are particularly hard hit by crime and human trafficking receive protection and support.

Regular basic medical care can also be taken advantage of. In addition, the target group always has access to psychosocial support, which is particularly important in view of their everyday situation.

The organization ARSIS organizes training courses for specialists from the state youth protection offices and social workers from non-governmental organizations from all over Albania. Through various trainings both groups should be able to better respond to the needs and interests of the children and young people and their families, in order to actively improve their living situation.

What is special

The center offers an all-encompassing approach: not only are programs for children and adolescents offered, but the basic needs of the families are also covered, such as washing clothes etc.

Through daily visits to particularly affected areas of Tirana, the social workers can precisely identify the problems of the children and young people and their families and provide help directly on site.
