Bosnia and Herzegovina is a divided country, which can be seen, among other things, in its education system: Almost 30 years after the war, there is still an ethnically segregated school system. This means that students* are sometimes taught in one school building, but separated according to population groups, and the curricula vary accordingly. Some of the schoolyards are even fenced off to prevent exchange. The teaching style is also characterized everywhere by frontal teaching and memorization. Open discussions and opinion forming are not intended.

Approaches to action

“ASuBiH” is a nationwide association of student* representatives from all population groups, which is committed to improving the situation at individual schools and the school system as a whole, as well as strengthening the rights of young people. “ASuBiH” represents the opinion of the students towards the public and politics.

In addition, “ASuBiH” is active in the European network of student* representatives OBESSU (Organizing Bureau of European School Student Unions) and represents the interests of its members. Nationwide the association has about 1,700 members and 67 regional teams. These now form a stable nationwide basis for projects, campaigns and actions such as language teaching, flash mobs, theater performances and panel discussions.

Since October 2016, “ASuBiH” has organized its own Social Day every year. With the money raised, small projects of students* in Bosnia and Herzegovina are made possible every year. Recently, the State Students’ Representative Office became a member of SAME, the umbrella organization of Social Day organizations.

The special

Young people take responsibility for improving their situation on their own and cooperate with many other organizations. At national and international level, they actively participate in shaping the education system. In this way, the association makes an important contribution to participation, involvement of young people in decision-making processes and democratization of society.
